Frequently Asked Questions

Type I is rated for impacts to the top of the head, such as an object falling from above. Type II adds protection against impacts to the sides, front and back, such as swinging loads or striking a beam. Many sites now specify Type II because lateral hits are common. The type is stated on the product page and inside the shell.

They are the electrical ratings. Class E (electrical) is tested to 20,000 volts, Class G (general) to 2,200 volts, and Class C (conductive) provides impact protection without electrical protection, which is why vented shells are usually Class C. Electrical workers need Class E. See our lineman boots range to match your footwear.

For work at height, climbing, and rescue, where a hard hat can come off in a fall or when you look up. A chin strap keeps the helmet in place so it can still protect you after a slip. Climbing-style helmets like the Height Endurance are built around that use.

Vented shells move air and are far cooler in summer, which keeps people wearing them. Vents also mean the shell cannot provide electrical protection, so vented helmets are rated Class C. Around live electrical hazards, choose an unvented Class E or G shell.

Immediately after any significant impact, even if it looks fine, and whenever the shell shows cracks, chalkiness, or fading from sun exposure. Suspensions wear faster than shells and are commonly replaced about once a year. Many manufacturers also set a maximum service life, printed or molded inside the shell.

An adjustment knob at the back of the headband that tightens or loosens the fit with one hand, even while wearing gloves. It is quicker and more precise than pin-lock suspensions and keeps the hat stable when you bend over. A snug suspension is part of what makes the hard hat protect as rated.

Many helmets accept accessory visors and face shields through a visor holder or built-in slots. Check that the accessory is compatible with the specific helmet, since a poorly fitted attachment can affect how the hat sits. See our Portwest eye protection range for visor holders.

Safety toe boots and hi-vis are the usual companions on construction and industrial sites. Check your site rules for the full list. See our construction work boots and Portwest hi-vis ranges.
